Sober Living

As we know, substance abuse is not something that forms over night. Often, it is a long process in which a person has been living with the disease for a very long time. Most commonly it is not until after the drug/alcohol has had a large negative impact on all aspects of the users life that they decide or are forced to seek help. A user may have been using for years until people have noticed and it has approached the point of being a severe problem.

Essentially this abuse overtakes a persons entire life, and it directly effects all fuctions of the person physically, mentally, and socially. Drug rehab and therapy is the first step in becoming clean, often rehab centers are used as more of a detox center, a person's stay is usually limited and gives them enough time to get the drug out of their systems and go through inital withdrawals however, that is only the start of the process of becoming sober. Being sober is a persons choice however after a short stay at rehab they are not fully prepared to get back into their normal lives that were previously ruled by substance abuse.

Sober living facilities also known as "halfway houses" make it easier for a user to transition back into their normal lifestyles. A sober house provides users with support and shelter but still certain limitations. Users are able to go out in the world and be productive however, they are still drug tested and kept (hopefully) sober by the limitations house leaders set them to. The purpose of sober living is to make the transition back into the real world easier, but being able to sustain sobereity and set future goals. Most importantly, sober living provides a safe enviorment and social support system for those who want to remain sober but may not have the tools that are needed to do it on their own after leaving rehab.

  1. I agree with the fact that not all of the time people will come out of rehab 100% sober. This blog has several interesting points that came across my attention. I feel that alot of the time a person goes to rehab they do not come out sober and it takes several attempts in order for them to become completely clean and sober. I think that the "halfway houses" is a great idea and makes it alot easier for people to become clean. People that have struggled with a substance abuse for many years will not come clean with a snap of the finger and need certain limitations and restrictions in their life and these "halfway houses" does just that for them. It is also important for the person to seek a support system, which the "halfway houses" provides as well. Therefore I really agree with the idea of "halfway houses". I cannot say from personal experience of dealing with someone from a substance abuse problem that the "halfway house" works but I feel that it does. Substance abuse is a huge issue that occurs in our society and we need to figure out ways to control it.

  2. I really liked that this entry focused on the individual and how they are affected by drug and alcohol abuse.

I have had friends who have gone into rehab, checked themselves out when they thought they were ready, and feel off the wagon shortly after. I think that halfway houses are helpful but not always successful. Although someone who thoroughly completed rehab and then went into sober house would have a better chance.

It just concerns me because when they are all done, they have to go back to their friends and family and life that existed before rehab.

Thank you for adding a website to go to in order to learn more about sober living!

  3. I also really appreciated the different view points presented through the course of the week. Just as Carolyn also posted..I have been close to friends and others who have been in Rehab facilities and seen the effects both positive and negative.
    Thanks,

  4. I like hearing about sober living, because it's something I completely believe can happen after rehab. My aunt was a drug addict and when she returned from rehab she was a completely new person, and she formed an amazing life dedicated to helping people like herself through social work and case intake at a shelter. She inspired me to believe in people with addictions and what they can change about their lives.
