I'm very familiar with the show, I used to watch it often. What I remember from the the show is that the mother was always lusting after some man, she was usually setting bad examples for her child, and she was loud, opinionated, and crude. She always had a roof over her head, didn't seem to struggle with financial problems all that often, and didn't get that much help from relatives.
ReplyDeleteSingle parents depend on family members in a huge way. I've spoken to a lot of single parents who have voiced that they probably wouldn't have been able to raise their child alone ..
I'm just no sure it was an accurate representation of single parenthood -- I would say that solely on the fact that Ms. Parker made it look too easy. I mean, some on, she had the luxury of spending so much time flirting with guys and lusting after someday ...

I have no idea whether or not it is accurate, and im sure it would vary from case to case, but I have a feeling that what Ashley said is dead on... Single parents probably would need to rely on services and support whether it's their friends, family, or community. It's a hard job to raise kids in general, and doing it alone must be really difficult. What's that expression people are always saying? It takes a village to raise a child? I think that's absolutely true.

I agree as well that this show is not an accurate representation of the struggles that single parent families face. Also, this takes us to the question of how the media influences our perseption of single parents families. Not all single parent families are black, and not all are sinlge mothers. There are many single fathers, and other races not shown in the media as being 'stereotypical' single parent families.
